Do you consider that the world is getting smaller or that the economy is accelerating?
Carlos GHOSN
Management has always been placed in a sphere where you would meet only people from the same culture as your own. We are now living in several worlds and several cultures at the same time. To fully make the most of this situation, to be able to lead efficiently a worldwide network of skills and cultures, our mode of management must take on an entirely different aspect.

What are the possible consequences of the difficulties American carmakers and suppliers are facing on the globalization of the automotive market?
Carlos GHOSN
I do not think that this phenomenon carries any particular consequences. In fact, if companies are restructuring, their business continues. I do not think, therefore, that these difficulties generate a breakdown in the supply chain. New suppliers may indeed appear and take the place of historical equipment manufacturers but this does not undermine the globalization of the automotive market. Our industry is continually changing and it is probable that those players in decline will be replaced. A number of companies have appeared recently – this is the case particularly in China – and they are anxious to succeed. If they are able to learn, if they establish partnerships and manage them successfully, they will succeed.

What is Renault’s strategy as far as the development of hybrid drive vehicles is concerned?
Carlos GHOSN
First of all we know how to build hybrid technologies: we master them. That said, we consider that in the short term hybrid cars do no represent the most pertinent offer for the European market. Diesel has in fact made some significant efforts. As regards Nissan, present in the United States, we will have to develop hybrid vehicles, as American regulations require this of us. In any case we consider that the market is still only in its infancy. In some years nevertheless the hybrid vehicle market segment will be a reality but we consider that any large-scale development in this scope is still premature. We are able, technically speaking, to do this but we do not yet see the interest. We must be ready, when the time comes, to respond to the emergence of this market. All depends, in fact, on customer expectations, which today concern price and respect for the environment.

It should be noted that customer expectations regarding clean cars differ from one country to another.

Certain countries actually concentrate on emissions of greenhouse gases while others concentrate on the emission of particles. All depends, in fact, on the regulator, who determines what a clean car is in one country or another.

Is the Logan a world car?
Carlos GHOSN
A reminder, once again, that there is no world car. But for all that, customer typologies are globalizing. Some French consumers, for example, adopt the same buying attitudes as the Chinese. From this perspective the Logan will be available where it meets customer needs. The Logan is a relevant example: it may interest certain Chinese customers, but certain French customers as well. The latter in fact are asking for inexpensive vehicles, with functions reduced to the minimum. There may be some doubt as to whether this type of customer is found in Eastern Europe.

Can we expect a reduction in consumers’ car budgets?
Carlos GHOSN
Consumers, to say the least, will refuse any increase in their automobile budgets: we will surely witness a shift of certain segments of automobile budgets to other vehicle segments, given the huge increase in fuel costs.

Mr Ghosn, where are we with non-emerging countries?
Carlos GHOSN
No country should be neglected. Some vehicle manufacturers are moreover in the process of positioning themselves in future emerging countries, which are already the target of small commercial operations. We all know that growth will indeed come, in current emerging countries, but also in future emerging countries. For our part we are preparing ourselves for such a change.
