An automated manual gearbox
The Quickshift6 gearbox (PA6) is developed from Renault’s 6-speed manual gearbox and consists of a manual gearbox combined with a module (computer and transducers) which automates the clutching, declutching and gearchanging operations. A second computer controls engine torque output and speed to ensure smooth gearchanging.
The Quickshift6 clutch-less gearbox gives drivers a choice between two driving modes:
• A semi-automatic mode, in which drivers select their own gears with a single movement of the gear lever.
• An automatic mode, requiring no action on the part of the user.

The best of both systems
Renault’s Quickshift6 gearbox combines the features of manual and automatic transmission:
Manual gearbox Proactive type automatic transmission
Driving pleasure Ease of use
Six forward gears Convenient in towns
Improved fuel consumption Auto-adaptive gearchange parameters
Stalling impossible
Easier gear changing
Engine overspeed protection

The benefits offered by the Quickshift6 gearbox are:
• Matches driver's driving style;
• Ease of use;
• 6 gear ratios available in both automatic and manual modes ;
• Impossible to stall;
• Engine operates at all times in its optimum range, thanks to auto-adaptive gearchanging characteristics;
• Ability to decelerate or hold speed using engine braking, as with a manual gearbox;
• Reduced average fuel consumption (by 8 to 10% according to version) in automatic mode when compared with a conventional manual gearbox.

Versatility of operation
On board, there is a new "joystick" type gear lever and no clutch pedal, so to move away from rest, all that needs to be done is to depress the brake pedal before moving the gear lever. The vehicle starts in automatic mode as the default selection. The Quickshift6 transmission can be used in two ways:
1. Semi-automatic mode
The driver changes gear with a single movement of the gear lever: forwards (+) to change up, and backwards (-) to change down. These changes can be made without lifting off the accelerator. When the gear change is taking place, the transmission computer works with the engine management unit to control engine speed and torque output in order to achieve a smooth shift.

The point . indiates the normal position of the lever.
The letter N indicates the neutral position within the gearbox.
Reverse gear, represented by the letter R, is engaged by two successive movements, one to the right followed by another to the rear, while keeping the brake pedal depressed.

Display depending on driving mode:

2. Automatic mode
In this operating mode, shifting between the 6 speeds takes place automatically according to auto-adaptive characteristics. The transmission computer selects the ideal ratio by analysing:
• The vehicle’s speed,
• The vehicle’s acceleration or deceleration,
• The driver’s individual driving style, measured by the speed with which the accelerator and brake pedals are operated,
• The road gradient (flat, climbing or descending).
• Vehicle load

Aids to starting
The Quickshift6 transmission features two aids to starting from rest: one when the vehicle is heavily laden, the other in low-friction conditions.

These functions are selected via a dashboard-mounted switch.
An indicator light on the dashboard shows the selected mode.
The "load" mode, for use when the vehicle is heavily laden, reduces clutch slip and alters the gearchange threshold points.
The "snow" mode automatically activates the automatic mode and limits wheel spin when starting from rest.

Easier driving
The Quickshift6 transmission also features some automatic operations which make for easier use and minimise the risk of driver error:
• Changing up is inhibited if the accelerator pedal is suddenly released.
• Changing down is inhibited if it would result in engine over-speeding.
• Automatic downshift takes place if the engine is under-speeding.
• Automatic downshift occurs if the brakes are operated.
• First gear is automatically selected if the speed falls below 7kph.
The selection of the ideal gear is made, as in the Proactive automatic transmission, in accordance with auto-adaptive parameters stored within the memory of the transmission computer.
More practical in all circumstances
The Quickshift6 transmission incorporates other safety and comfort features:
• A "kickdown" function allows for rapid downshifting in urgent situations (avoidance, overtaking, sudden braking) and greater transmission responsiveness.
• For easier parking manoeuvres, the transmission allows movement at idling speed, sometimes known as "creeping". In first and reverse gears, the vehicle moves at idling speed after the brake pedal and/or handbrake is released. This function also allows the vehicle to be held steady on a shallow gradient and facilitates hill starts.

14 Nov 2007, 14:11:
The Clio's new Quickshift 5 clutchless transmission means "the engine can really express itself", says Renault - but is it capable of convenience and comfort?
Renault's new Quickshift 5 transmission is another variant on the clutchless transmission theme. As you'd expect from the name, it has five ratios which can be switched by flicking the gear lever forwards or backwards, plus a fully auto mode for town use or for when you just can't be bothered to change gears yourself. For the moment, this transmission system comes paired only with the 1.2 16v engine (75 bhp) and Expression and Expression+ equipment levels, though if it proves to be a success, Renault will wheel it out into larger-engined and more lavishly-specified models in the range.
Derived from the standard five-speed manual 'box but with an added electronic control module, Quickshift 5 is lighter and more compact than the Proactive autobox fitted to the Clio 1.4 and 1.6 models. It comes in cheaper, too, at a £400 premium over manual versions, compared to £900 for the Proactive. Renault also claims that, unlike traditional automatic transmissions, there is no penalty to pay in terms of fuel consumption - in fact, official consumption figures promise an extra mile to the gallon compared to the manual version, at 48.7 mpg. Carbon dioxide emissions are also kept in check, at 137 g/km, making it tax-efficient.
"We wanted to produce an automatic that could be cheaper, and also has better efficiency for a smaller car", says Roland Pernod, Renault Product Manager. "We want to make it possible for people to buy a small car with auto, and would like to make it possible to use either auto or manual". He is keen to stress that Quickshift 5 doesn't hamper performance, saying that it means "the engine can really express itself". Renault is also keen to differentiate it from other sequential-shift products on the market, calling it a 'flick-shift', because it has the facility to go up or down more than one ratio at a time (provided you stay within the set rev limits). So it's small, cheap to buy, economical - and fun?
And fun it is, in flick-shift mode. The 1.2 16-valve engine, although not the most refined motorway cruiser, is nippy, responsive and gutsy, and the gearbox allows you to work this to best advantage. Sure, there's a brief delay before it changes, but it's a quicker shift than the average driver could manage on their own with the clutch pedal, and it can change up or down smoothly whether you lift off the throttle or not. Like Fiat's Punto Sporting Speedgear, it shows that a small auto car needn't be slow, dull or uninvolving.

Of course, many small auto buyers won't be interested in the performance potential or claimed sporting characteristics of Quickshift 5, or even want to try out the flick-shift, so there is the fully auto mode. Modes can be changed by pressing a button to the side of the gear lever knob, or flick-shift mode activated by pushing the lever backwards or forwards. The auto mode employs the car companies' favourite clever electronic trick, "fuzzy logic", to decide when to change gear according to the driving style, speed and acceleration or deceleration, or road gradient. As in all modern autos, it features 'idling creep' to help with hill starts and parking (this does not happen in flick-shift mode).
Here's when the Clio Quickshift 5 feels more like auto superminis of old; in fully auto mode, it is slower to respond, sluggish to accelerate and even slower to adapt to driving style and characteristics. The fuzzy logic of the control unit remained convinced that we wanted to rev to 7000 rpm and reach 70 mph in second gear - however slowly and calmly we tried to negotiate town traffic. In fact, trying to emulate cautious, careful drivers seemed to confuse it more - it even started to change up on the apex of bends, which was not helpful at all. It seems that the adaptive control requires a lot of feedback time to adapt, and is not as intuitive as, say, the Speedgear system. However, it should adapt happily to your driving style if you live with it long term, and aren't prone to erratic mood swings...
The latest Clio (facelifted back in June) is an appealing package anyway, and Quickshift 5 extends the range further. But it fills a very specific niche, and may not suit comfort-seekers that really don't want to get too involved in the driving process.
