Renault and Bajaj confirm preliminary deliberations


Bajaj Auto (Bajaj) and Renault (Renault) are in preliminary deliberations to jointly understand customer requirements and business potential for “very competitive vehicles” in India.

If concluded favorably, this could lead to a long term partnership between Renault and Bajaj for the development of the business so conceived.
Bajaj Auto is a manufacturer of 2-wheelers and commercial vehicles with sales of over 2.7 million units in FY07 – including exports of 442.000 units – representing revenues of $2.3 billion (10070 Crore rupees).

The €41.5 billion Renault group designs, develops, manufactures and sells vehicles worldwide. Today, it produces cars and light commercial vehicles in 18 countries on five continents, selling vehicles under three brands – Renault, Dacia and Renault Samsung. Renault’s international growth results from its Alliance with Nissan, strategic partnerships such as the one with Mahindra & Mahindra in India, and the creation of products focused on the different requirements of customers in all parts of the world.

The above information is provided to clarify matters as they stand, in view of recent speculation of varying accuracy.

Grupul Renault pregătește lansarea unui model mai ieftin decât Loganul. Mașina de 3.000 de dolari va fi produsă în colaborare cu indienii de la Bajaj Auto, dar nu va fi importată în Europa.

După mașina de 5.000 de euro, care costă de fapt peste 6.000 și este produsă sub marca Dacia, inginerii și designerii francezi au primit ca sarcină de la șeful alianței Renault-Nissan, Carlos Ghosn, dezvoltarea unui model care să coste 3.000 de dolari. Acest vehicul „super-low-cost“, numit deja de presa internațională „fiul lui Logan“, va fi destinat însă numai pieței indiene și statelor vecine, unde normele de siguranță sunt mult mai relaxate. De altfel, Ghosn a declarat luna trecută că „cel mai probabil, dacă vom construi acest tip de mașină, vom alege India, pentru că furnizorii și uzinele costă puțin, iar piața de acolo este favorabilă unor produse ieftine“. Conform directorului comercial Dacia, Jacques Daniel, noul vehicul ar putea fi elaborat de compania românească, aceasta putând participa și la producerea lui. „Autoturismul poate fi dezvoltat atât de Renault, cât și de Dacia, însă cred că trebuie folosit know-how-ul Dacia pentru autoturismele economice“, a spus oficialul francez. Cu toate acestea, este greu de crezut că firma românească va avea mai mult decât un rol de consultant în proiectare, dat fiind faptul că Renault are în plan deschiderea unui centru de inginerie asemănător celui din România, în Asia, și că mașina va fi mult diferită de Logan.

The Bajaj RE60, arguably the first quadricyle of India is continuing on what appears to be the final phase of testing.

The test mule of the RE60 was spotted by the guys at the Facebook page named Cousins on Cars. The quadricycle looks diminutive when compared to the Maruti Alto which is also in the frame, suggesting that the vehicle could be handy in the bumper to bumper city traffic.

Bajaj has developed the RE60 completely in-house without any inputs from Renault-Nissan who are reportedly interested in the car to play the entry-level Datsun. However, the information regarding Renault-Nissan’s partnership with Bajaj remains sketchy and unpredictable.

According to Bajaj, the RE60 was not aimed at the Tata Nano but was conceived as an upgrade for the three wheeled auto rickshaws, million of which have been sold since their inception throughout the world. The quadricyle, hence sits between a rickshaw and a full fledged car making it strictly an urban runabout. A private version, as suggested by this spyshot, is also in the making.

The RE60 gets its motive power form a 20hp 200cc DTS-i engine which is mounted at the rear. RE stands for Rear Engined and 60 represents the amount of CO2 emitted (in grams) per kilometer. The vehicle can reach a top speed of 70 kmph.

The Bajaj RE60′s price depends on whether the government of India decides to implement the quadricycle policy.
